Blinker

$28

Spirit: Rye Whiskey
Flavors: Grapefruit, Raspberry

First published in Patrick Gavin Duffy's 'The Official Mixer's Manual' in 1934, some consider the Blinker to be a variation on the classic Whiskey Sour. Born in Ireland, Duffy began bartending in New York at the age of 16, and after Prohibition was repealed, his Manual became one of the most important collections of cocktail recipes.

The raspberry preserves are a perfect balance to the rye; the cocktail is neither overpowering nor overly tart. "My wife isn't that into brown liquor, but she does love a good Blinker."

Spirit Recommendations

Wild Turkey Rye 101 - Wild Turkey straight rye is known for its deep golden amber color and warm, smoky flavor. Moderately spicy in most settings, here, the vanilla and spice notes are softened by the raspberry preserves. At a good price point, this is a staple for any home bar - try it in a classic Sazerac sometime.

Instructions

1. In large shaker, combine 1 oz grapefruit juice, ¼ oz simple syrup, 1 bar spoon (approximately ¼ oz) raspberry preserves, and 2 oz rye whiskey
2. Add large ice cubes (so as to not dilute the cocktail) and shake vigorously for at least 15 seconds
3. The raspberry preserves will clog the shaker strainer - vigorously shake the contents into a mixing glass or spare cup, then fine strain into a chilled coupe
